In the Studio - Kurt Gunn
By Jillian Dawson
Kurt Gunn joined us as Rock Garden Studio this past weekend to work on his latest full-length album. “This material is my wheelhouse, it’s what I’m most comfortable writing and performing; I feel this is a true representation of what I’m about musically.”
With influences from Tom Petty, Warren Zevon, Ryan Adams and Paul Simon, Gunn describes his sound as folk/rock with a bit of alt country. “This album will be very singer-songwriter with a strong emphasis on lyrics over instruments with a simplistic feel – look for more topical material.”
The album, Gunn’s fourth release tentatively titled “Forty,” is a solo effort that will feature a handful of guest musicians. “I have a long list of people I’ve met through the years that will come in and perform if the situation is right.” This album will feature the likes of Adria Ramos on violin, Ric Armstrong on drums, Riki Schultz on additional guitars, Chris Hanaway on bass and Marc Golde on keys.
Gunn previously recorded with Golde at the former studio in 2007. Since reconnecting at the WAMI’s, Gunn knew he wanted to work with him again. “Marc is very easy going and fun to work with. I was [at the studio] a month ago to perform at a showcase and the building looks cool and sounds amazing.”
Gunn has added a few of his new songs into his sets throughout the summer. You can catch his upcoming performances at the 602 Club in Appleton October 7th and at Stone Cellar for Stone Arch Sessions November 1st. For a complete list of upcoming performances, check out www.kurtgunn.com.
